Drug-smuggling businessman paroled: "Sydney Lallouz, 62, was sentenced in September 2006 to a 6 ½-year prison term after pleading guilty to buying the hashish in Pakistan and making arrangements to have it shipped to Montreal.
The problem with his plan was that the RCMP were aware of it almost from the start. After Lallouz and his associates had trouble finding a ship with a captain willing to pick up the hashish in international waters, the Mounties supplied a vessel themselves - complete with undercover officers.
Lallouz, an associate of the West End Gang who regularly drove around in a Porsche and a Jaguar before his arrest, informed the parole board that he acted as a broker in the deal because of financial woes and a gambling problem. He owes Revenue Quebec and Revenue Canada about $50 million in total.
Because he had not been granted parole previously, Lallouz automatically qualified to be let go when he reached his statutory release date, which arrived roughly at the end of January."
